Instructions
- Paint a wooden star your favorite color. Let the paint dry completely.
- Decorate the star and write messages on it using Elmer's 3D Washable Paint Pens™. Let the paint dry completely.
- Cut a piece of ribbon about 5" long. Cut a "V" shape into each end of the ribbon.
- Fold the ribbon in half at an angle so that it makes an upside-down "V".
- Glue the ribbon onto the back of the star. Make sure that the ends of the ribbon can be seen hanging down below the star. Let the glue dry completely.
- Attach a magnetic strip to the back of the star and hang!
- Talk with students about stars. Discuss how the Sun is the closest star to planet Earth. Have students guess how far away the Sun is from the Earth. Then, tell students the correct answer. Encourage students to spend time observing stars in the night sky. Discuss some well-known constellations, such as the Big Dipper and Little Dipper.
- Have students make a graph of several well-known stars and their distances from the Earth. Help students research and find this information. Discuss the term light-year as a unit of measure.
- Encourage students to write a story about their favorite "superstar." This person might be an athlete, a movie celebrity, or a popular singer. Ask students to write about why they admire the "superstar."
