Instructions
- Draw your stained-glass window design on a sheet of scrap paper with a pencil. Extend the lines of your drawing to the edges of the paper. This gives the design the look of a real stained-glass window.
- Repeat the design on a piece of foam board.
- Trace the pencil lines with a thick black marker.
- Fill in the segments of your design using Elmer's Paintastics™ paint colors. Let the paint dry completely.
- Hang your stained-glass window on the wall to be admired.
- Stained-glass windows have been around for thousands of years. They are typically associated with religious buildings, such as churches, cathedrals, and were used in early Christian churches in the 4th and 5th centuries. Ask students to research stained-glass windows and create a timeline illustrating their history.
- Have students choose a famous piece of stained-glass, such as the rose window in the La Sainte-Chappelle chapel in Paris. Ask students to write a brief report about the famous piece of art and share it with the rest of the class.
- Talk about how stained-glass is produced with your students. Discuss that stained-glass is glass that has been colored while it was being created. With a stained-glass window, the small pieces of colored glass are arranged to make patterns and pictures. The glass is held in place by pieces of lead and a frame.
