Instructions
- Sketch a scene on a piece of foam board with a pencil.
- Cover a flat surface with newspaper, and place the foam board on it.
- Trace over the drawing with glue. If you are working with colored sand, use Elmer's Washable School Glue™. Trace over only the lines in the drawing that will be the same color. For example, start with all of the lines that will be blue. If you are working with natural sand, trace over the drawing with Elmer's 3DWashable Paint Pens™. Sprinkle sand over the drawing all at once. Then, shake off the excess.
- Let the glue or paint dry completely. Hang up your artwork to be admired!
- Have students sketch different geographic scenes, such as a beach, mountaintop, or rainforest. Discuss the different geographic areas that exist in the United States and in the world.
- Ask students to brainstorm a list of the many ways that sand is used. For example, sand is used to make concrete and glass, and it is also spread on icy roads to improve traction.
- Grains of sand are extremely tiny. They measure in size from about 1/16 of a millimeter to 2 millimeters. Have students use a ruler to measure this amount. Ask them to think of other objects that are this small.
