Instructions
- Paint the inside of a glass jar. Let the paint dry completely.
- Decorate the outside of the jar using Elmer's Paintastics® paint colors. Let the paint dry completely.
- Tie a ribbon around the neck of the jar.
- Fill the jar with dried flowers, pens, or pencils!
- Do not put water inside the jar. This will make the paint fade.
- Encourage students to create this vase as a gift for someone special. Have students design and write a card to accompany the gift. Students can fill the vase with dried flowers for a mother's day gift or fill the jar with pens and pencils for a great father's day gift.
- Show students how to dry flowers to go in their vases. Select a group of cut flowers. Wrap a rubber band around the stems. Hang the flowers upside-down in a dark, dry area. Let the flowers hang for two or three weeks until they are completely dry. Once dry, spray the flowers with hairspray for extra protection.
- Discuss recycling with your students. Talk about the importance of practicing the three Rs—reducing, reusing, and recycling. Ask students to brainstorm ways that they can reduce the amount of trash they produce. Ask students to brainstorm ways that they can reuse things more than once. (This project is a great example of reusing an item in a different way.) Ask students to list all of the items that they recycle in their homes.
