Instructions
- Fold a sheet of construction paper in half lengthwise.
- Write your name in block letters with a pencil. Make sure that the bottoms of the letters sit on the fold of the paper.
- Leave the paper folded. Carefully cut out the letters, making sure that you do not cut on the fold.
- Unfold the paper and erase any pencil marks.
- Cover the back of the paper with a glue stick.
- Glue your name to another sheet of construction paper that is a different color.
- Hang up your symmetrical creation for others to see!
- Have students write acrostic poems using their names. The first word in each line of poetry should begin with the letters of the student's name. For example: Makes good grades Always friendly Totally hilarious Takes good care of his pet.
- Encourage students to write and cut out additional words for this symmetry project. Ask students to try writing words that are really long or really short. Create a "word wall" to display students' work.
- Discuss the vocabulary words symmetry and symmetrical with students. Then, introduce the terms asymmetry and asymmetrical, which mean the opposite. Show students pictures of objects and ask them to identify if the objects are symmetrical or asymmetrical.
