Instructions
- Paint the bottoms of two paper plates using black paint color. Let the paint dry completely.
- Glue two Jiggly Eyes to the bottom of one of the plates. Let the glue dry completely.
- Cut the black construction paper into eight strips 1" wide by 12" long.
- Fold each strip back and forth accordion style. These will be the spider's legs.
- Glue the legs to the top of the paper plate that does not have eyes. Let the glue dry completely.
- Staple the two paper plates together around the rims. Leave an opening on one side to insert the newspaper.
- Stuff the body of the spider with crumpled newspaper. Then, staple the hole closed. Staple a string to the top of the spider craft and hang!
- Use black construction paper for the spider's body, instead of painting the paper plates black.
- Discuss spiders with your students. Talk about the common characteristics that all spiders have—eight legs and a two-part body with an abdomen and a thorax. Discuss other spider characteristics, such as multiple eyes, fangs, and spinnerets, which allow spiders to spin silken webs.
- There are over 30,000 different types of spiders! Help your students research and name eight different kinds of spiders. Draw a large outline of a spider. List a spider your students name on each of the eight legs.
- Create a word web! Draw a web on a large sheet of paper. Write key vocabulary words on the web, and post it in a place where students can see it. Update the words on a regular basis.
