    Papier Mache Piggy Bank

Create this adorable papier mache piggy bank!
    • Easy to Moderate

    Supplies Needed

    Tip:

    • You can alternate black and white newspaper with colored comic pages to see which layer you are working on.
    • After the papier mache is dry, you may want to do a base coat of white paint to cover up the newspaper before painting with your colors.
    • To make it easier to handle the pig while adding the papier mache, position the balloon on top of a coffee cup. You can easily turn and move the mug with the pig on it.

    Instructions

    1. Mix equal parts of Elmer’s Glue-All and water together.
    2. Inflate a balloon.
    3. Cut two toilet paper rolls in half for the legs. Cut 4 small slits at the end of each roll, fold back, then tape tabs to inflated balloon. Slightly indent the bottom of the paper rolls for the pig's hooves.
    4. Cut out pointed shapes from the remaining toilet paper roll for the ears. Cut a slit at the bottom of each ear to form a tab to tape to the balloon.
    5. Tape a plastic bottle cap to the balloon to cover up the knot.
    6. Wrap the balloon pig with layers of newspaper strips coated with glue. Use wet, unglued strips for the first layer. Dip the strips into a 50/50 mixture of Glue-All and water. Pull each strip between fingers to squeeze out excess water or brush a thicker mixture on one side of the strip. Build up four or more layers by alternating layers crosswise and up and down.
    7. When thoroughly dry, have an adult help cut a slit in the top of the bank. Trace a bottle cap on the bottom of the pig, then cut the hole out slightly smaller to insert the cap (so you can remove money from the bottom of the bank). Cut a small slit on the back of the pig where the pipe cleaner tail will get inserted.
    8. Now the fun part—paint and add features! Twist pipe cleaners to form a mustache, monocle, tail, and eye brows. Glue on goggly eyes and features. Stencil a dollar sign or your name using Elmer's Board Mate® Reusable Plastic Stencils. Apply Elmer's Glitter Glue for extra pizzaz!
