    Outdoor Hanging Bar Cabinet

Don’t let a small space cramp your summer entertaining style. Create a custom hanging bar cabinet with inexpensive pine boards. This hinged cabinet folds up and out of the way when it’s not in use.

    Supplies Needed

    1. Gather all cut 1x6s and dry fit for accuracy.
    2. To add a decorative profile to the top of the cabinet, lay out a pattern using an old paint can and cut it out with the jig saw. Sand the cut smooth.
    3. Glue and nail together the top, bottom and sides of the outer cabinet. Make sure to use a stainable exterior wood glue, like Elmer’s Carpenter Wood Glue Max.
    4. Fit the vertical divider and shelf, and glue and nail them into place.
    5. Evenly space the three 1x3x24 support pieces parallel to each other on a flat surface.  The outside edges should be 32” apart, the width of the cabinet. Glue and nail the ten 1x3x32” horizontal pieces into place.
    6. With the front and cabinet complete, it’s time to attach them with a piano hinge. Line up the front with the cabinet and mark the hinge location - make sure there is clearance for the front to open 90 degrees. Screw the hinge in place.
    7. Attach the hardware. Place one eyelet at the top of each side of the cabinet and at the end of each side of the front. Make sure the front is exactly 90 degrees from the cabinet with a speed square and attach the chain.
    8. Place a hook and eyelet latch at the top of the cabinet to keep it shut and place picture hanging loops at each top corner of the cabinet.
    9. In preparation for staining, fill all the nail holes with a stainable exterior wood filler, such as Elmer’s ProBond Wood Filler. After drying for 30 minutes, sand everything smooth with 150 grit sand paper.
    10. Stain all surfaces of the cabinet with an exterior wood stain. Let dry.
    11. Once dry, hang in your favorite shady spot. Don’t forget to stock it with your favorite summer libations!
