Painted Puppet Scene

Supplies Needed

  • (2) Elmer's Bi-Fold Foam Boards, 12"x18" or 20"x30"
  • Craft Bond Tacky Glue
  • Prepainted wood shapes - Michaels Stores
  • (3) 3 3/4" long wood fences
  • (1) 3" sun
  • (4 - 6) animal characters (for puppets)
  • 1 pkg. foam sticker flowers, asst. sizes - Creative Hands by FibreCraft
  • (4 - 6) jumbo craft sticks
  • Light moss green acrylic paint
  • Glue gun and glue sticks
  • Transparent tape
  • Pencil
  • White scrap paper
  • Approx. 1/2" wide flat paint brush
  • Sponge
  • Plastic container
  • Paper towels
  • Water

Instructions

  1. To connect Elmer's Bi-Fold Foam Boards, open panels, face down onto table. Aligning short edges, run tape along joint. Apply a second layer of tape for durability.
  2. To paint scene, turn back over Foam Board unit to front. Pour acrylic paint into container and add just enough water to create a milk consistency, gently stirring with brush. To paint light green background of scene, work on one panel at a time. Dampen sponge with water and wipe entire first panel. Use brush to apply paint and use sponge to distribute with vertical strokes. Repeat for each panel. Also use flat brush to paint all foam edges of Foam Board. Let dry.
  3. For grass, practice dry-brush technique on scrap paper: Rinse off brush, gently dry on paper towel and dip just the tips of the bristles into the paint. Wipe off any excess paint on paper towel and apply to scrap paper with strokes that go from bottom, up. Allow ends to wisp as you lift up on the brush stroke. Practice long and short strokes. (Because objects farther away look smaller, notice that the long grass strokes are at the bottom of the scene (close up); medium strokes are in middle (farther away); and short strokes are at the top (even farther away). Practice this look on scrap paper and then paint Foam Board scene working from small grass at top to long grass at bottom. Let dry.
  4. For flower stems at bottom (closest to you), hold flat brush sideways to create thin strokes and practice making stems on scrap paper. Also practice making "squiggly" leaves on stems and then paint Foam Board scene Let dry.
  5. Sort flowers into three sizes. Remove paper backing and attach large flowers to painted stems. Randomly attach medium flowers in middle area of medium-length grass and small flowers near top of scene in short grass.
  6. Use Elmer's Craft Bond Tacky Glue to glue two fences to top right side of puppet scene and one fence on top left. Also glue sun onto fence. Let dry.
  7. For puppets, glue ends of craft sticks to backs of wood animals and let dry. Enjoy creating shows with the Painted Puppet Scene. Optional: paint another scene on the back - such as wavy water with waves. (Remember to paint large, medium and small waves to show distance through perspective).
